2000/2012 Novatec 80 Supernova- Incredible Value for a Pre-Owned Yacht

2000/2012 Novatec 80 Supernova “DREAMCHASER”

In my line of work I get used to dealing with yacht models that are made in higher production numbers that many people in the yachting business have seen and are familiar with…brands like Hatteras, Marlow , Lazzara, Ocean Alexander, Horizon, etc.  All are good yachts, but there are also other manufacturers out there that are as good or better quality, they may just not be as commonly known…Novatec is a yacht brand that I would put in that category…and they are still in business manufacturing yachts.

When I was approached about listing the “DREAMCHASER” a Novatec 80 Supernova for sale I was instantly curious.  I had heard of Novatec before but knew very little other than it was a line of yachts built in Taiwan…akin to Horizon and Ocean Alexander.  The more I dug into the yacht and Novatec in particular the more interested I became…she featured many of the advanced construction techniques that we see in yacht manufacturing today, such as:

  • Solid fiberglass hull bottom with woven roving multi layer mat construction and unidirectional fiberglass reinforcement
  • Divinycell foam core in between fiberglass layers above the water line (cannot get saturated like balsa core in many other manufacturers)
  • Longitudinal and transverse strengthening stringers throughout the hull
  • All hull and deck joints bolted and bonded with fiberglass and epoxy resin

These items gave me great confidence in the construction of the vessel from a structural standpoint…this was done right!  I later learned that Novatec has been making boats for both military and recreational use since 1983…they are a well established and known boat and yacht manufacturer in Taiwan.

2000/2012 Novatec 80 Supernova “DREAMCHASER”

Fast forward to 2011- the current owners of DREAMCHASER purchased her after exhaustive background research, they were looking for a solid and reliable yacht to customize and refit to their taste, so finding a yacht with excellent construction quality was extremely important.

Their plan was to owner/operate the yacht without crew and spend extensive amounts of time aboard in Southeast Florida, the Bahamas and Caribbean.  They wanted a large enough yacht that they could run just the 2 of them but with enough space for tons of gear and supplies.  Additionally, they wanted living space aboard for at least 2 other couples to stay with them in total comfort.

Also important was redundancy…these owners had boated long enough to know what it is like to be in a remote area of the Caribbean in summer and have an A/C unit go out!…more on redundancy of systems that they added later…

The Novatec 80 Supernova hit all those points, and to boot it has exquisite burl wood throughout the interior that the current owners absolutely fell in love with…a type of wood that is only used today in small quantities, like as a table inset, due to its rarity and high cost.

Taking this excellent platform, the current owners embarked on a refit project in 2012 to customize and update her to their discerning taste…and now in 2019/2020, they really never stopped adding material improvements along with a high-line maintenance and upkeep program.

**I do have to say, this is one of the nicest kept owner/operator large yacht that I have seen…despite not having a full time captain or crew on the payroll they have deftly handled the maintenance and upkeep at a very high level.

Starting in 2012 and continuing even to today, the current owners added an enormous amount of upgrades and material improvements that far and above will exceed any other vessel of this age on the market…AND the vessel is still in active use with regular system exercise, which we all know is vitally important to fight vessel atrophy.

Some of the material improvement highlights include:

  • Awlcraft hull and topside paint job
  • Custom fiberglass hardtop with stainless steel reinforcements
  • Hot tub on the flybridge aft deck (removable if desired)
  • Updated soft goods throughout
  • Areas of new exterior teak decking
  • All LED lighting throughout
  • Updated Garmin touchscreen navigation electronics
  • (2) Inverters – REDUNDANCY!
  • (2) Watermakers – REDUNDANCY!
  • Back up air conditioning units – REDUNDANCY!
  • HD SAT TV with updated flat screen TV’s
  • AND MUCH MORE…see full listing link below for details

In addition to the above value-add items, she has received regular maintenance and service on her systems to so she is ready for adventure at a moment’s notice.

3 Master Stateroom Layout

3 Master staterooms? What does that mean? The Novatec 80 Supernova has a very special layout that features 4 staterooms + crew.  Allow me to explain…

#1- Forward master stateroom – Accessed by stairs forward of the galley and features a walkaround king size bed with nightstands, setee, huge flat screen TV, his and hers hanging closets and a large ensuite head

The 4th stateroom is a bunk room located off the midships master by the engine room access.

Performance

I was able to sea trial the DREAMCHASER when we took the photos and video in Jacksonville, FL.  She runs very well at both displacement speed (slow, economical cruise) and planing speed (fast cruise) and has a wide open throttle of around 23 knots.  The 80 Supernova is a solid feeling boat while running, only enhanced by the fin stabilizers.

Novatec 80 Supernova “DREAMCHASER” Performance:

8.5 Knots — 1000 RPM — 15GPH — 31% engine load

10 Knots — 1200RPM — 28GPH — 35% engine load

18 Knots — 2000RPM — 118GPH — 77% engine load

23 Knots — 2300RPM — 150GPH — 100% engine load

*To note from an owner/operator standpoint- there is a multi camera system on the boat that is viewable from the helm stations to enhance the visibility and situational awareness…4 of which are on the aft deck with others in the engine room

Excellent Entertainment Spaces

DREAMCHASER features an inviting layout on the main deck and flybridge with multiple entertainment spaces throughout.

Aft Deck – A large U-Shaped seating area surrounds a custom teak table added in 2012 with inset compass. Also here are 2 oversized (and VERY comfortable) chairs with ottoman in between.  A refrigerator is an arm’s length away in the cabinet under one of the counters on either side of the salon entry doors.  The extended aft flybridge overhang provides plenty of shade for all.

Bow – Walking along the wide side decks to the bow from the aft deck you will see a large sunpad centrally located.  It can easily accommodate 4+ sunbathers when getting a tan is the priority!

Salon – Here is an over sized U shaped couch to port and 2 armchairs to starboard with pop-up flat screen TV in between.  Along with a soft goods refit was also a beautiful inset ceiling feature with burl wood and led rope lighting for effect.  The forward part of the salon features a bar with 2 wine chillers and glass storage.  Also forward is an ample sized day head for guests.

Dinette – By the lower helm station is a cozy dinette table with U shaped seating.  This area offers direct proximity to the galley and the large windows around allow for great views outside

Flybridge Midships – This is one of my favorite areas…excellent visibility all around you with a faint breeze blowing by, all under the cover of the large fiberglass hardtop for shade.  This area easily will seat 8+ people in comfort, with a U shaped seating area to port around a custom teak table and a large setee to starboard.  At arm’s length is a sizeable refrigerator/freezer, wet bar and grill as well as flat screen TV connected to the HD SAT dome…imagine watching your favorite team playing on a Saturday afternoon up there while enjoying a cold beverage!

Flybridge Aft – Last but definitely not least! This area features a 2 teak lounge chairs and a hot tub…all with spectacular panoramic views.  The hot tub was added as part of the vessel refit and was made to be removable if more deck space is desired.  Also here is a large davit arm that can function to hoist a dinghy/jet skis/mopeds/etc.  Overhead is a canvas fly cover for protection from the sun that is easily removed and stored.

The Bottom Line

The bottom line…I believe that DREAMCHASER offers an exceptional value for the price for a few reasons

Reason #1 – At 80 feet this yacht offers an excellent layout with her 3 master staterooms and ample lounge space throughout.  The burl wood throughout is unlike anything I have seen in a yacht and is really stunning.

Reason #2 – She offers very reliable systems- CAT3412E engines, Northern Lights generators, heavily upgraded Air Conditioning systems that will freeze you out with multiple redundancies, 2 watermakers, 2 inverters, back up pumps, etc…

Reason #3 – She has a ton of other improvements- exterior paint, fiberglass hardtop, upgraded Garmin electronics, soft goods redone, camera system etc…

Reason #4 – DREAMCHASER has benefitted from very fastidious owners that keep her in top mechanical and cosmetic condition…one look in the engine room and you will know what I mean…don’t take my word for it…come see the boat, I guarantee you will be highly impressed throughout

Why is she for sale?  The current owners have greatly enjoyed the journey of yacht ownership but have decided that now is the time to move on, they will likely look to acquire a smaller vessel for more localized cruising.  The owners are realistic sellers that will make someone a great deal, optimally they would love to sell her to someone that will show her the same care and love they have given her over the last 8 years.
